FMM - Find My Mac

What is FMM and What Are the Implications?

FMM stands for "Find My Mac," which is a feature of Apple's ecosystem designed to help users locate and secure their Mac computers in case of loss or theft. Similar to "Find My iPhone" for iOS devices, Find My Mac is part of the broader "Find My" service that helps users locate their Apple devices, share locations with friends, and protect their data.

If a Mac has FMM on, the device will have major issues including the following:

  1. Activation Lock Issues: The device remains linked to the previous owner's Apple ID, causing Activation Lock. The new owner can't use the Mac without the original owner's Apple ID and password.
  1. Limited Functionality: Restricted access to features and settings due to the persistent connection to the previous owner's Apple ID.
  1. Inability to Fully Utilize the Device: The new owner cannot maximize the Mac's functionality without disabling FMM and signing in with a new Apple ID.
  1. Potential Security Concerns: Loss of control over security features like remote lock, location tracking, and remote wipe if the device is lost or stolen.
  1. Resale Complications: Future resale may be problematic, as activation lock issues could persist for subsequent buyers.
